General candidate wins; President Yameen's defeat

Opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohammed Solih was elected as the new president of Maldives. Maldives president Abdullah Yameen lost the last presidential election last Sunday. Abdullah Yameen declared yesterday that Maldives respects the democratically delivered judgment and congratulates Ibrahim Solihih as the new president.

Sunday's presidential election recorded 92 percent of the vote. The polls were held till 7pm. Despite the much anticipated expectation that Maldivian President Abdullah Yameen was expected to retain his office, Ibrahim, a longtime parliamentarian who was in the opposition, was shocked. At 134,616 votes, Yameen received 42 percent of the vote, 96,142 votes. The Election Commission announced that Ibrahim Solih was successful.

Abdullah Yameen addressed the nation to television yesterday to put an end to these suspicions. He said that he accepted the judgment of the people and acted with genuine dedication to economic progress.

Abdullah Yameen said that he would remain in office until his term ends on November 17.
