President Sirisena dismissed Ranil Wickremesinghe from Prime Minister on 26 October, due to a conflict between Ranil Wickramasinghe and Chiranjeevi, the leader of the United National Party (UNP) in Sri Lanka. Former president Rajapaksa was appointed as new prime minister. Strong resistance has shifted across the country.
To deal with this, Sirisena ordered the dissolution of the parliament and the new elections. Supreme Court ruled that his action was illegal, and his cabinet was banned. Rajapaksa resigned yesterday because of the crisis.
Ranil Wickramasinghe took the post again as prime minister yesterday. President Sirisena made a sworn oath to him.
The parliament is the first for the first time since these political conflicts. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya announced that Rajapaksa was appointed as the primary opposition leader in the parliament.
